Portland Playhouse

Published June 10, 2010 at 8:11 a.m.
In a town with a ton of theaters and playhouses, this is an edgy gem. The edginess is what makes it a gem though. I bought a fertile ground pass this year and for the most part, I was greatly disappointed in my experience but discovering this one playhouse made it worth the entire pass price.Be prepared for a funky theater in the round, where the actors perform next to your feet if you sit in front like I did. It's got a black box feel with enormous talent in your face with their story. I can imagine some people would like this aspect, but it was a superb art performance. The pick of plays also make Portland Playhouse stand out. It was this one play that made me long for my theater-going days. I missed the August Moon show and wish they could bring this back for just me. I am watching this playhouse and will try to see anything they produce from now on.
